Explore Your Liberal Arts Education

The fundamental strength of the Letters & Science experience is that it’s broad and inherently interdisciplinary, characteristics that serve us well in an ever-changing global community.
Ways of Knowing
A liberal arts education teaches you how to connect ideas across subjects. L&S students link science with society, data with storytelling, communication with meaning; connections that help you think more creatively, solve complex problems, and make sense of the world beyond any single major.
You may hear your academic advisor refer to this as “L&S Breadth,” which refers to the wide range of learning across disciplines that make up your education. As an L&S student, you will build skills in all these areas, no matter your major:

Humanities
Learn about people, their ideas, cultures, values, stories, and ways of expressing themselves through subjects like history, literature, languages, and philosophy.

Social Sciences
Learn about how people behave, interact, and organize society, using research and data to understand things like communities, governments, economies, and social issues.

Natural Sciences
Learn how the physical and living world works by observing, experimenting, and using evidence to understand things like Earth’s climate, living organisms, and the universe.
How will you customize the Ways of Knowing?
Every student will customize their L&S education in their own unique way. Interested in Healthcare? You may also want to explore the Humanities by taking an Ethics course. Interested in Global Politics? You may also want to explore the Natural Sciences by taking an Environmental Sciences course. And if you have an interest in Criminal Justice? Maybe you also want to learn about Psychology!
Your unique liberal arts education will tell the story of you!
